Arnold Folly – A Wonder of the Industrial Revolution
19th March 2021 @ 19:00 – 20:00
As part of British Science and Engineers Week, we are happy to host a talk by Malcolm Darroch on Arnold Folly, a wonder of the Industrial Revolution.
Davison the son of a hosiery manufacturer and Hawksley the son of a Maltster, combined forces in 1788 to develop one of the largest worsted spinning mills of the 17th century. Located in the small town of Arnold, a suburb of Nottingham, the implications of the development were far reaching.
This talk illustrates the valuable contribution that both families made to Arnold, Nottingham and Great Britain, including steam engines in Derbyshire and the first Gasworks in Nottingham.
Malcolm was born and grew up in Nottingham. He trained as a structural engineer in the mid 60’s before moving into finance in the 90’s, he now presents a series of interesting talks on a wide variety of topics.
